長野県岡谷市にある「ヴィラアゼリア（Villa Azalea）」は、築200年以上の古民家を改装した宿泊施設です。

この施設は、旧中山道沿いに位置し、源義仲の家老・今井兼平を祖とする今井家の歴史ある邸宅を活用しています。母屋は延べ床面積266.05㎡で、囲炉裏や養蚕・製糸に使われた道具が残されており、岡谷の「糸都」としての文化を体感できる空間になっています。

内装には、蚕の糸から作られた壁紙や繭をモチーフにした照明など、シルク文化を意識した意匠が随所に施されており、裏庭にはモミジが植えられ、前庭には市花である10種類以上のツツジ（アゼリア）が彩りを添えています。

伝統と現代的な快適さが融合したこの施設は、都市部や海外からの観光客に岡谷の魅力を伝える拠点として注目されています。地元業者、岡谷蚕糸博物館なども協力しており、地域全体での文化継承と観光振興の一環としても意義深いプロジェクトです。

Villa Azalea in Okaya, Nagano

Villa Azalea, located in Okaya City, Nagano Prefecture, is a lodging facility renovated from a traditional Japanese house that is over 200 years old.

Located along the historic Nakasendō route, Villa Azalea is housed in the former estate of the Imai family, descendants of a samurai who served General Yoshinaka during Japan’s feudal era. The main building, with a floor area of 266.05 square meters, still holds features like a traditional irori hearth and old silk farming tools—offering a chance to experience the culture of Okaya, once known as “the city of silk.”

Inside, the design pays homage to silk culture: wallpaper made from silk threads, lighting inspired by cocoons, and thoughtful materials throughout the space. The back garden features maple trees, while the front garden comes alive each spring with over ten varieties of azaleas—Okaya’s official city flower.

With a thoughtful balance of traditional character and modern convenience, Villa Azalea offers a tranquil yet inspiring stay. It’s a meaningful cultural project supported by local craftsmen, and even the Silk Museum—sharing Okaya’s heritage with travelers from Japan and beyond.
